The University of Pretoria Centre for Language Learning is about more than just
English grammar and speaking. Here, we encourage our students to immerse
themselves in everyday life in Pretoria. So, about 20 of our students volunteered
their time at Pretoria Dog Rescue, as part of a Friday activity.
Students were given the opportunity to walk and play with the beautiful dogs at the
rescue centre, and teachers and students dedicated themselves to animals for an
afternoon. It was an experience some of the students had never had before, but they
approached the task with courage and enthusiasm.
Students took on the challenges of walking big, small, old and young dogs. They
cared for the animals and treated each one with the respect and love they deserve.
Those who didn’t walk the dogs had another important role: they played with dogs.
The rescue centre has a few arenas where students could take dogs to play with a
ball or run freely. Everyone had fun, including the teachers!
This experience showed students that they can navigate different situations, follow
instructions and communicate effectively in English in real-world situations. Keep
reading to see what students had to say.
‘I really enjoyed the activity on Friday. The dogs were so cute and friendly. I´d love to
do it again!’ – KeNi (Intermediate student)
‘Last Friday, I had a great time. It was interesting to see all students interact with
animals (dogs). Without a doubt the dog is the best friend of the man.’ – Damien
(pre-intermediate student)
