ENGLISH IMPROVEMENT COURSES
A chance to further your career opportunities!

The English Improvement courses offered by the University of Pretoria are specifically designed for South African adults who speak English as a second language, and who want to improve their language skills for the workplace. The next English Improvement courses will run from August to October, 2024. These courses are offered at two levels:  pre-intermediate and intermediate.

PRE-INTERMEDIATE

The pre-intermediate course includes workplace communication skills such as:

​

  • Communicating job roles and responsibilities.

  • Giving and receiving instructions and feedback.

  • Writing professional emails and memos.

  • Developing a CV and cover letter.

  • Conducting short presentations on work-related topics.

  • Handling telephone conversations and taking messages.

  • Exploring common workplace challenges and solutions.

  • Preparing for mock job interviews.

INTERMEDIATE

The intermediate course includes:

​

  • Giving and receiving feedback in a constructive manner.

  • Role-playing typical interactions found in the workplace.

  • Writing professional reports, memos and proposals;

  • Using phrasal verbs and idiomatic expressions commonly found in business.

  • Avoiding common grammatical errors in professional communication.

  • Structuring presentations for clarity and impact;

  • Responding to common interview questions effectively.

  • Handling workplace conflict and challenges professionally. 

Dates:  17 August - 26 October, 2024

Times:  Saturdays, 09h00 - 13h00 

Duration:  42 hours over 11 weeks

Cost: R5,200 per student

Venue:  Hatfield Campus, University of Pretoria

NOTE:  Not all aspects of the syllabus are included in the overview of the pre-intermediate and intermediate courses given above.

 

In order to properly benefit from these classes, all students will need to have a certain level of English proficiency. For this reason, participants will be required to do a one-hour proficiency test on the first day (Saturday, 17 August), and will be placed in the pre-intermediate or intermediate class depending on the results of this test.
