How many ways are there to cook eggs?

As a student of English as a foreign language, you may be staying with a host family while you are studying English. Staying with an English-speaking host family gives you to the chance to become immersed in an English environment, and so helps to improve your English fluency as quickly as possible.

One of the advantages of a host family is that you learn another culture as well as the English used in the home environment. If you join the family for breakfast in the morning, you will be asked what you want for breakfast, and may be offered eggs. As you probably know from your own culture, there are many ways to cook eggs … and these are the English names for basic ways in which eggs can be cooked for breakfast:

Hard-boiled eggs – place the whole egg with the shell into boiling water, and cook for 10 to 12 minutes.

Soft-boiled eggs – as you did with hard-boiled eggs, place the whole egg with the shell into boiling water, but you only cook the egg for six minutes. The yellow (yolk) and white of the egg will be much softer when you crack the shell. You can now dip slices of toast into the soft-boiled egg.

Scrambled eggs – break the eggshells and pour the eggs into a bowl. Then whip the eggs with a little salt, pepper and milk. To prepare the pan in which you cook the eggs, rub butter onto the surface of the pan, and then place it on a medium heat. Pour the egg mixture into the pan, stirring the scrambled eggs constantly. Serve with hot, buttered toast.

Omelets – an omelet is prepared in the same way as scrambled eggs, but you turn and fold the eggs while cooking instead of stirring. You also add ingredients such as cheese, sliced green onion or green pepper and sausages to the eggs once they have started to turn solid, a few minutes before you serve them with toast.

Fried eggs – crack the egg directly into a buttered pan. If you like soft eggs you fry it for a short period so the egg yolk remains runny. This is known as “sunny-side up”. If you prefer your eggs well cooked, then you flip your egg when the edges are brown so that the yolk cooks from both sides.

Poached eggs – prepare a small pot of boiling water. Crack the egg into a bowl, stir the water in the pot to create a whirlpool, and then carefully drop the egg into the center. The swirling water will help the egg white stay together. Cook for about five minutes.
